Back from
the Trip

We spent the last day at Lisa's aunt and uncle's house. Had a great barbecue. Then we hopped in the Westfalia and began the drive back to Los Angeles.

I had intended to use day 10 to sum up my feelings about our project and reach some conclusions about such projects in general. I also wanted to upload copies of all the paintings I did on the trip.

We got an interesting e-mail about midway through the trip, commenting on whether anyone would really find such an expedition interesting. I think it's a reasonable question. I too had my doubts about such a project. Why would anyone care that we drove around the state painting and writing? Well, somebody must have, because we got a lot of great e-mail.

I guess I'm not sure that I would have cared if I hadn't done it myself. It's important to remember that this was an exploratory piece. None of the content was prepared. We wanted to see what would happen and we did. We wanted to see if such projects could be worthwhile.

The same questions of relevance apply to Avoid/Bisect Nevada as any other performance piece. The availability of technology makes such endeavors very democratic and perhaps content becomes watered down. Anyone who watches MTV knows that.

Many people enjoyed the daily updates and were disappointed when they became more sporadic. A friend suggested that any future projects should include a person dedicated to producing the page so that the artists could focus on content. I would take care of all hardware and software concerns before embarking and research alternative methods of uploading. Cellular modems and the like might improve ftp access and provide opportunities for interactivity.

The interenet is already a powerful means of communicating and dispensing information. It is up to us to see how it develops as an art medium.
