In the Van

Entering UtahIt wasn't long before we were up and out of Cave Lake. Lisa's not opposed to organized campsites, she just didn't find the artificial, manicured lake all that thrilling. We went back to Ely to see if I could find any paper or canvas to paint on. Rives, Stonehenge, I'd have settled for Strathmore. Well there must not be that many artists in Ely, because there sure aren't any art stores. I was about to tear out of a paint store in exasperation when I noticed a pile of wallpaper sample books. A few moments later I was the proud bearer of several large bound volumes of the nicest sponge-washable vinyl flower covered sample books you could imagine. Yee haw! We drove to Baker where we picked up some victuals at the store of a woman from Northern California who likes the country but misses the art films and thai food. We learned we weren't far from Lehman Caves so we shuttled down a dirt road the site of the aforementioned caves. All along the route we noticed someone had gone to the great effort of setting up simple little found art pieces on the stakes of the fences bordering the road. It began with a motorcycle helmet scarecrow, continued through a unicycle with smiling faces waving, passed through a few gesturing gloves and ended with an actual bicycle driven by a headless skeleton. We were in time for the 2:00 tour at the cave, so we sauntered in.
After the caves we drove on to Utah. We stopped shortly after crossing the border so that I could try painting with my new medium: wallpaper and acrylic. I experimented with the camera, setting it to take a picture every minute during our drive into Utah. It was getting quite dark. We stopped in Milford for chinese food then continued on to Beaver. Somehow or another we found a camp and quietly shut down for the night. - Craig |
