Along the Loneliest Road
by Lisa Verlo
on Highway 50 east of Fallon
there's a mountain of sand
called Sand Mountain
you can take a shovel
and a pail of water
you can build a castle
with a tall tower
the wind will take the edge off for you
call it home for awhile
as you drift
along the loneliest road
on Highway 50 west of the mountain
3 little girls died
in a covered wagon
Jennie, Louise and Emma Le Beau
buried in 1864
and again in 1941
when rain washed out a skeleton
on the Salt Wells Basin
their grave site sits in memory
of all the pioneers that perished
along the trail
now the loneliest road
on Highway 50 in the middle of Nevada
is a town called Austin
with it's very own castle
well it's more like a tower
lookin' over a valley
lookin' out at a river
lookin' like the weather
took it's edges off
built as a home by Anson P. Stokes
now folks stop by
in droves
along the loneliest road
