CD Covers, illustrations and editorial cartoons

I served briefly as the designer for the legendary folk music label Arhoolie. Chris Strachwitz, proprietor of Arhoolie, is one of the world's great musical archivists, promoting some of the all-time greats in blues, zydeco, country, gospel and world music.

I was excited to work with Arhoolie and produced 12 cds for them. My vision was to raise the stakes of their packaging design as Reid Miles had done at Blue Note, but they thought a real high end approach would alienate many of their budget shoppers looking for low-cost compilation cds. So I moved on.

Cover illustration for the world's foremost cop/poet

My cousin Harry Fagel is a true character and the world's greatest living cop/poet. When his first volume of poetry was produced by Zeitgeist Press, I was happy to provide the cover art and design. I created a woodblock print of a rioter and superimposed it over a treated photo of the old Vegas strip. I thought it captured the essence of his in-your-face dark language.

My Cartoon for the San Diego monthly

Years ago I produced a monthly comic for an arts publication. It allowed me to vent about issues of concern and stupid things that bothered me. I wrote this piece about the time goatees were first becoming popular among the artsy crowd.

My Cartoon for the San Diego monthly

The paper gave me complete latitude for content and design. It was a great forum for me to experiment with layouts and ideas. It's sad to think that I was warning people about what a cretin Rush Limbaugh was almost 20 years ago.

  llustration for Umbrella magazine

Umbrella was an underground arts and fashion magazine in San Diego. It was beautifully published with some of the best artists and photographers in the city. I interned with Umbrella early on in my career. This illustration was for a piece called "Road Rage".
